Fasting Instructions

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4

What is Fasting?
Why do Fasting?
How to do fasting?

There is not only one way to do it.
Fasting is personal. it is different for each one of us.

Important. We are saved because we believe in Salvation offered by Jesus on that Cross. It is offered freely for us by the Loving grace of our loving God. Remember you dont get saved because you fast.

When we fast we take in less. We feel hungry and weak.                                                                                                           Hunger makes us want to fill that emptiness and weakness with...well food.
This is your moment of fasting! This is the moment you can decide to eat and move on as usual, or turn instrospective and spend time with the Lord. During this time of physical hunger and weakness, we turn to our loving God to fill us with his spiritual food. This decision is the moment of victory in fasting.

Ways to fast - There are many ways.

Daniel fast sometimes also known as The Monastic Fast
Give up all  - Give up meat and all meat products and alcohol. No Beef, pork, chicken, fish and eggs. This leaves us with hundred's of variations of bean products,Vegetables and fruits. Remember, beans will give you the protein you need. Drink water and juice. This is the strictest of fasts. This fast can be a tough one and will require "training". So... do this in steps and take it slow.

Give up less - This means eat what you normally eat but in reduced portions. So if you eat two chicken breasts reduce it to one. For instance reducing your intake by 50% is a simple way.

Give up some thing, or some food  - This is where one can decide to give up chocolate, or sweets during lent. Others to give up are entertainment, certain activities, alcohol or other things that brings us pleasure. Giving up cafeine or processed sugared drink or pop/soda.

Partial fast - This is a Timed Fast. Zero intake of any food or alcohol say from 6.00pm to 6.00am. One option here is to give up dinner and replace it with a simple fruit. The time and options you choose is yours. This is just one example.

Yet even now, declares the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning. Joel 2:12

1) Be clear and specific. Why are you fasting? Do you need direction? Do you need healing? Do you need restoration of a relationship? Are you facing family issues? Are you facing financial difficulties? Are you facing something or someone you dont know / or dont want to face? Are you facinga crisis? Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.

2) Surrender your life fully to Jesus Christ and prepare to be transformed - Romans 12:1-2

3) Decide on the type of fast and replace that time of eating with prayer and Bible study.

4) When you fast, your body will detoxify and eliminate toxins. You wil have discomfort like headaches and irritability. This is due to withdrawal from caffeine and sugars and processed sugars. And dont forget, you will have hunger pains. You are following the example of Jesus. (Matthew 4:2)

5) Turn to God. Everytime you want to eat turn to God instead. Turn to Scripture. Turn to your favorite praise and worship. The first few days will be difficult. Overcome that hunger and headaches and pains and lay them all in God's hands. You are replacing your access food with spritual diet. This is the goal. A daily life that includes spiritual diet. Rely on the Holy Spirit and God's word for sustenance now. If you are having difficulties call a spiritual mentor or your Pastor for support.

5) Limit your physical activity and exercise moderately. Remember to rest. Fasting brings about miraculous results. Find ways to pray throughout the day. Be aware of distractions and stay away from them. Schedule an alarm to go off in your smart phone for prayer time. YES schedule time to read scripture. Schedule time for praise and worship.
